English Pathway

About English Pathway.

A clean, focused way to move from B1 to C1 and get the exam score you need.

What this is

English Pathway is a free, structured course for learners between B1 (pre-intermediate/intermediate) and C1 (advanced). It covers listening, reading, writing and speaking, and every lesson is linked to the tasks in IELTS, TOEFL iBT and TOEIC.

How lessons work

Each skill has three courses (B1, B2 and C1) of about four hours each. Every lesson follows the same steps: a quick warm-up, a short explanation of one skill or strategy, a model, practice exercises with instant feedback, exam tips, key vocabulary and a summary. Most lessons take 15 to 25 minutes, and each course ends with a review or mock test.

Listening and speaking in the browser

Audio is generated by your browser's text-to-speech, so voices vary by device. You can choose a US or UK voice and change the speed. Speaking tasks record your voice and, in Chrome, Edge and Safari, show a live transcript with your speaking speed and filler words. Recordings never leave your device.

Writing feedback

Writing tasks include a timer, a live word count and automatic checks for paragraphing, linking words, sentence length and repetition. You then compare your answer with a model and a self-check list based on public band descriptors. Automatic checks are a guide, not a score.

Your data

There are no accounts and no tracking. Your progress, saved words and drafts are stored only in your browser's local storage. Use Export on the Progress page to back them up or move them to another device.

Original content

All passages, audio scripts, questions and model answers were written for this site. They are not taken from official test materials. IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC are trademarks of their owners, who do not endorse this site. Exam information is checked against official sources, but formats change, so confirm details with the test provider before you book.

Our standards

In October 2026 every lesson, practice test, the placement test, the grammar reference and the word lists were reviewed against public standards, and every problem found was fixed: 3,727 items checked and 512 fixes across all 144 lessons. Every new lesson was reviewed by someone other than its writer.

  • Levels checked against the Council of Europe CEFR descriptors (B1, B2, C1), with vocabulary checked against the English Vocabulary Profile and the Oxford 3000/5000.
  • Exam tasks, timings and score scales checked against the official IELTS and ETS websites.
  • Every question solved by a reviewer before checking the answer key, so each has one clear answer and accepts all correct spellings.
  • Writing and speaking rubrics based on the public IELTS band descriptors (2023) and the published TOEFL and TOEIC criteria.
  • Facts in reading and listening texts checked, and corrected or made general where they could not be verified.

This is a content review, not an official certification. Only the test owners (IDP, the British Council and Cambridge for IELTS; ETS for TOEFL and TOEIC) can certify exam results.

What you can expect after the course

Each course (one skill at one level) is about 6 hours, and the whole site is about 70 hours of guided study. Moving up a whole CEFR level usually takes around 200 hours of learning, so no course this size can promise a new level or a score. What it can do, if you complete your level with the exercises, writing and speaking tasks and practice tests:

Know every task

You will know each task in IELTS, TOEFL iBT and TOEIC and how long you have, so there are no surprises on test day.

Use proven strategies

True/False/Not Given, headings, distractors, note-taking, Task 1 overviews, essay plans and two-minute talks.

Build exam vocabulary

About 1450 exam words with flashcards, and 14 key grammar points with their most common mistakes.

Practise under time

Timed practice tests for every skill, so you get used to working at exam speed.

To get the most from it

  1. Take the placement test and complete all the lessons at your level.
  2. Do the timed practice tests, then retake the placement test to see your progress.
  3. Ask a teacher to check some of your writing and speaking: the course uses self-assessment.
  4. Before you book, take the official practice tests from IELTS or ETS, and read and listen to English every day.
